Art Education

[ MA DEGREE ]

The Master of Arts program in Art Education meets the needs of art educators who desire advanced professional development and expertise in the field of art education and those who desire further study toward a doctorate degree.

Goals, contents, and methodology of teaching art have undergone vast changes in the United States and elsewhere in the world in the last decade. In view of these developments, we believe our program is consistent with current best practices and theory. We look forward to presenting this vision of art education to you and also to pooling and sharing your ideas, expertise, and experiences with us and your colleagues in the program.

[ ADMISSION ]

Admission to the program is obtained through Graduate Studies and the Department of Visual Arts. Applications for admission to the program are done online and are available for download and submission through Graduate Studies' web site.

[ APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS ]

Applicants must meet the following conditions and submit the following materials to Graduate Studies in order to be considered for admission:

  • Completion of a baccalaureate degree in Art Education from an accredited U.S. or Canadian university. Applicants holding other teaching degrees may be considered if art deficiencies or professional education deficiencies are completed to the satisfaction of the Art Education Graduate Admissions Committee prior to admittance in the program. This committee is comprised of Art Education Graduate Faculty.
  • Achievement of a 3.0 GPA during the last two years of undergraduate course work
  • Certification to teach in public schools at the elementary or secondary level or equivalent professional background related to other educational venues (e.g. museum and community education)
  • Two years of art teaching or equivalent experience
  • Completed application forms:
    • Two official transcripts for all college work
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • $50 Non-refundable application fee

[ DEPARTMENT REQUIREMENTS ]

In addition to these materials to be sent to Graduate Studies, or online, the following should be sent to the Graduate Coordinator, Department of Visual Arts, Brigham Young University, E-509 HFAC, Provo, Utah 84602-6414:

  • One or two written papers
  • Slide portfolio of recent work
