In addition to the spring term program in New York City and other Study Abroad programs, internships are offered to accommodate the need for individual study and refinement of skill. Whether based across the nation or overseas, students gain invaluable practical experience as they work alongside prominent practitioners in their respective disciplines and build lasting relationships with industry professionals—a major building block of a student's career.
Please click on a section below for more information.
A student may register for 1 to 6 credits of internship. A student must register for a minimum of 1 credit.
Important!
All forms are important to the internship and are signed by the internship provider, and the student. This is a signed contract and students must complete what they have contracted to do.
Requirements per credit are as follows:
- For every 1-2 credits, the student must complete at least one project as discussed with their Faculty Advisor and to let the Internship Coordinator know what that project will be.
- For every 1 credit, the student must work at least 45 hours on the internship during the course of the semester.
In order to obtain credit, the following forms must be completed:
- Complete the online Internship Application (log on to Route Y, in "quick URL" type "Intern01" and follow the directions)
- Internship Project Requirements form (signed by the Faculty Advisor)
- Master Internship Agreement (Completed by the Internship Provider if we do not have them on file already).
- Student Agreement
The Internship application can be found online (log on to Route Y, in the "Quick URL" type "Intern01" and follow the directions on that page). The other forms are available from the Visual Arts Internship Secretary in the Visual Arts Department Offices in E-509 HFAC. The application and all forms must be completed and submitted to the Internship Secretary before the internship begins or before the add/drop deadline for the semester for which the student is seeking credit (whichever comes first). Once the application has been approved (all forms turned in), the student receives an email from the Internship Office telling them the student can now register for the class. The student is RESPONSIBLE to register for the class, themselves after they receive the email from the Internship Office. .
All Visual Art students will register for VADES 496R. (excluding Art Histroy students)
Art History will register for ARTHC 496R and will work with the Art History department faculty member to work on any projects they are required to complete for this internship.
NOTE: Internship credit will not be granted retroactively. Internships can only be petitioned to add only 5 days after the internship starts if it begins after the add/drop deadlines in a semester.
For an internship where a student will be living or traveling outside of the United States, again an online application must be filled out and a number of forms need to be filled out with the International Internships Coordinator in the International Study Programs (ISP) Office.
The first step is for the student to complete the International Study Programs Proposal for an Individual Internship (available from the ISP Office or the VA Internship Coordinator). The student then takes the form to the International Internships Coordinator and obtains and ISP Application and waits to be approved by the ISP Office.
Application Process
The ISP online application can be found here. Apply under "Individual Internship." Applications for international study programs are due according to the following schedule:
| Semester |
Date |
| Fall |
April 1 |
| Winter |
October 1 |
| Spring |
February 1 |
| Summer |
April 1 |
Prior to the ISP application submission, the student will need to check with the Department Internship Coordinator to assure that the internship focus is in line with the Department's academic focus. To determine this, please talk to the Internship Coordinator.

Following the completion of the ISP Application and approval from the ISP Office, the International Internships Coordinator will facilitate the completion of the following forms:
- International Memorandum of Understanding
- International Experience Information Sheet
- International Student Agreement
The student then meets with their Faculty Advisor to complete the Internship Project Requirement form and submits this form to the VA Internship Coordinator.
Pre-Departure Course
Individual interns are required to participate in a 1-credit pre-departure course, IAS 360 International and Cross-Cultural Preparation. This course covers topics such as cross-cultural communication, international development, volunteerism and service-learning, personal safety, and international security, and how to maximize the international internship experience. Please check with the ISP facilitator (below) for the current section number.
Registration for BYU Credit
Registration for BYU credit and courses abroad will occur through ISP at the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies, 280 HRCB. Courses must be set-up as a "study abroad" section by ISP. With department approval, courses from any departments can be set-up through ISP.
Grading
Grading for an international internship is completed in the same manner as for domestic internships, except that the Faculty Advisor submits the grade to the Kennedy Center.
Safety
BYU students will not be able to participate in internships where the U.S. State Department has issued a Travel Warning, prohibiting U.S. travel. Please find this list here.
Funding
A student may obtain funding through grants, such as the Oscarson Discovery Grant. Information about grants can be found on the College website here.
Recently there has been money afforded the department from the Dean's office specifically for internship students. This may be available again, but we do not know the amount for that scholarship at this time. Students who turn in all the paper work on time will be considered for this money when it becomes available.
Students wishing to retain other scholarship or talent award money granted by the department while taking less than the usual number of required credits (e.g. only 2 credits of VADES 496R) must contact the Visual Arts Department secretary to go through an appeal process.
